Wood continuously expands and contracts with changes in humidity as the season's change. Because wood is a hygroscopic material, when exposed to either moisture or dry air, will reach an equilibrium between humidity and temperature of the air. Moisture absorption causes wood to expand and moisture loss causes wood to shrink.

Wood flooring is generally expected to expand in wet climates and shrink.

Depending on your climate's conditions surrounding installation can influence wood's natural expansion and contraction. Colorado's cold dry winter's demands a homeowner to keep their furnace running and the their home's doors and windows shut which, draws moisture out of one's hardwood floors and may cause the wood tho shrink and crack between the hardwood boards.

Changes in temperature and humidity

In the summertime shrinking and cracking will revert and remedy itself as moisture in the air is absorbed by the hardwood flooring. Expansion of the wood occurs and the hardwood floors return to their original state.

Hardwood Flooring Recommendations

In order to minimize the effects of the heat inside from running your furnace in the winter, a humidifier is highly recommended to maintain a relative humidity of 35 to 45 percent throughout the winter months. Do not fill your hardwood during the winter months. When summer arrives, the wood must find a place to go as it expands and will either force out the excess fill or else the hardwood boards will warp.

The Janka Hardness Test

The Janka hardness test measures the hardness of a type of wood by comparing its resistance to weight and wear. The hardness of wood varies with the wood grain's direction. This test is meant for only "unfinished, open grain wood" that has not been treated with any wood polish or lacquer finish.
